Zachary Barnes

Zach is a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern. He began his Masters in Marriage and Family studies at Alliance Graduate School of Counseling and is currently completing his studies at Iona University – NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences (expected graduation in Spring 2024). He holds undergraduate degrees in Musical Theatre and Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan and loves performing and seeing theatre in his free time. He is also an active member of his church in New York City.

As a therapist, Zach’s approach is collaborative and systemic. His role is to serve as a guide to clients’ self-discovery, helping clients make meaningful connections between the past and the present and desired changes in their present and future. He works from an attachment lens to help his clients build emotionally safe and secure relationships, emphasizing the importance of empathic listening and communication. Zach also emphasizes the concept of differentiation — the ability for people to maintain their own identity and sense of self while being able to closely relate to others (family, community, religious community, work colleagues, etcetera). Zach specializes in helping clients break free from confining life narratives/scripts given to them by their culture, religion, society, family, or any other powerful systemic source — it is his joy to help clients craft new, preferred stories for their lives.
