About Dra. Sooyeon Lee-Garland

Sooyeon Lee-Garland, Ph.D., LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, with over two decades of clinical and supervisory experience.

She holds a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Antioch University New England and began her academic journey studying music composition at Yonsei University in Korea, later completing her M.A. in Music Therapy at New York University. Deeply rooted in community mental health, Dr. Lee-Garland spent almost 20 years serving under-resourced families where she also supervised postgraduate clinicians and master’s-level interns. She is an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor with additional certifications in TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Imago Relationship Therapy.

Her clinical work is strongly informed by her own experience as a racial minority and immigrant. Dr. Lee-Garland’s professional focus centers on working with immigrant families, navigating cultural adjustment and generational conflicts. Her doctoral research explores the role of transnationalism in shaping identity resilience and challenges among multiracial Asian Americans, a study supported by a Family Process Institute grant. As a bilingual clinician fluent in Korean and English, she brings a culturally attuned lens to her therapeutic and supervisory practices.

Dr. Lee-Garland has taught at Fairfield University, Antioch University New England, and the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute. She also serves as Music Director at a local United Methodist Church, where she integrates faith and service. Her work is deeply grounded in her Christian faith, commitment to social justice, and belief in strengthening families as a cornerstone of community healing. She is passionate about training the next generation of therapists to become reflective, culturally responsive, and socially responsible practitioners.
